WRITING CHRONICLE #15: Contest! & #AuthorToolboxBlogHop

Via: Daily Prompt – Climbing & Jolt

kindle-storyteller

I have been very erratic about posting on the blog recently. It’s because I’m preparing for a writing contest! Amazon UK has launched a writing competition, the Kindle Storyteller literary prize, and I’ve decided to give it a go. Aside from the £20,000 cash award, it also offers the opportunity of being recognized in a well-publicized platform and a book marketing contract by the sponsors. The money is tempting but the glory would be nicer. That’s one way up the ladder, right?

Now, here’s the thing. No way am I delusional enough to believe that I’m winning. But it will ensure that the judges will read my story and who knows, I may pick up a contract anyway. The award program was announced last February but for some reason, I only received the reminder e-mail, which was sent last week. And the entry closes on May 19! It has to be a previously unpublished story of minimum 5,000 words (which is manageable). I had thought of putting in one of my short stories (we fiction writers always have a few completed works lying around) but decided I was to write a fresh one.

So here’s how I’m working through my essential checklist:

  1. Am I 18 years old? Checked.
  2. Have an Amazon account? Duh!
  3. Have a completed Amazon KDP account? Yes! Finally.
  4. Accepted the KDP and KDP Select T&C? Done.
  5. Opened an online payment account since Bangladeshi banks are not listed with Amazon? An irritating problem but researching on the best platform to overcome the challenge.
  6. Wrote a new novelette worthy of the task? Work-in-progress. Expecting approx. 15,000 words. Is going to be a sad tale with a happy ending.

So I’ll only be posting my committed weekly WRITING CHRONICLES and WEDNESDAY REFLECTIONS for the next few weeks until my entry is written, polished, and submitted. This is the first time I’m doing something like this. I’m pretty sure lotteries and competitions don’t work around me – or rather, for me. But when I read the e-mail, I just felt this thrill. A catch in my breath, you know? And I knew, I just knew I should do this. I’m a little awed by my boldness but what the hey! It’s a step.

Nano Blog and Social Media Hop2I also thought this would be perfect for my first Author Toolbox Blog Hop post. I’m sure some of you, my fellow authors (on the hop and off), will not know about the contest and may wish to enter as well. So there you go, the link is on top. It’s a great opportunity and simple enough to commit to. I’ll see you on Blog Hop Day!

If you do decide to enter, make sure you read through all the guidelines and policies carefully. There’s a lot. The terms and conditions are simple although there are quite a few “ifs” and “buts” to navigate. I wish all current and potential contestants all the best!

Best of luck — if your story is anything as open, compelling, and well-crafted as this piece, you’ll do well! If nothing else, it’s terrific experience and great exposure. Good luck!

I saw this competition a little while ago too, but I thought that it was too short notice for me to try. Maybe I will reconsider 🙂

    Good luck with your entry!

I wish I had seen it sooner. But I figured 5,000 words is a simple enough investment. I have always wanted to attempt NANOWRIMO but lacked courage. Thank you for the good wishes! 😃

      • #23 by Louise@DragonspireUK on April 19, 2017 - 10:59 pm

I may churn out something at the end of April. You’re right, 5000 words isn’t too bad, no where near the 50000 that I’m doing for NaNoWriMo this month: It’s hard work, but good fun, and the community of writers is inspiring 🙂

      • #24 by lupa08 on April 20, 2017 - 12:31 am

Best of luck with the NANOWRIMO! 😃
        Now THAT requires perseverance!

  12. #27 by Caroliena Cabada on April 19, 2017 - 5:09 pm

Thanks for this post! Finding writing contests to enter is a daunting task, and I appreciate being alerted to a specific one. This sounds like a great opportunity! Best of luck to you! 🙂

    • #28 by lupa08 on April 19, 2017 - 10:30 pm

Welcome and thanks! I’m encouraging as many people to enter since the word limit is so small and it will get the right people to read your work.

  13. #29 by Kristina Stanley on April 19, 2017 - 9:02 pm

Good luck. It’s courageous to put your work out there. I also believe being shortlisted or winning a writing contest can help your writing career, so it’s worth the effort.

    • #30 by lupa08 on April 19, 2017 - 10:34 pm

Thank you! I’ll be happy just to be contacted by the sponsors outside of contest shortlisting for a book marketing contract, lol.

  14. #31 by M.L. Keller on April 19, 2017 - 9:26 pm

good luck. It’s always an emotional risk putting your work out there.

    • #32 by lupa08 on April 19, 2017 - 10:49 pm

Thank you! So true. But I feel as though it’s time to buckle up.

    Best of luck!

  17. #37 by Mica Scotti Kole on April 19, 2017 - 10:31 pm

Good luck in the contest! I don’t have anything novelette-sized in any sort of decent shape right now, lol. I haven’t written something that size since high school. Perhaps one day I’ll give it a try again. There are other contests for novellas and it would be nice to have something on hand for these contests! http://micascottikole.com/2017/04/18/writing-transitions/

    • #38 by lupa08 on April 20, 2017 - 12:28 am

Thank you! I write mostly novels and any short story I have written were mostly summary versions of novels. So for the contest I have decided to write a completely new book so as not to waste the opportunity with something I’m not entirely ready to have read. The lower word limit probably had a lot to do with my finding the courage to actually do something like this. Win-no-win, for me it’s really about throwing myself to the challenge of entering.

  18. #39 by raimeygallant on April 20, 2017 - 12:50 am

How exciting! Thanks for letting us know about the contest. There’s also the Writer’s Digest competition that’s coming up in May: http://www.writersdigest.com/writers-digest-competitions/annual-writing-competition I believe it’s for short stories as well, but there’s an entry fee if I’m not mistaken. Thanks again for sharing the contest with the writing community and with the #AuthorToolboxBlogHop.

Welcome and thank you for sharing the WD competition news. Sometimes taking on these challenges can have very encouraging effects on getting introvert writers out of there shells.

  19. #41 by M. Talmage Moorehead on April 20, 2017 - 1:10 am

I think you’ll win first place. Modesty is always appreciated, but in your heart it’s probably to your advantage to aim for being the best. Not just the best you can be, but the best in the entire world. I know it sounds nuts. But this kind of private inner freedom to imagine literal greatness gives your subconscious mind a simple, clear message. Of course you’ll have to keep it to yourself or most people will look down on you for a lack of objectivity and realistic modesty.

Have you read, “The Talent Code” by Daniel Coyle? It’s a life-changing book for some people.

    Good luck!

    • #42 by lupa08 on April 20, 2017 - 1:14 am

You’re right. You do sound nuts, lol. But it’s greatly appreciated. I’m actually being realistic. While I will play to get noticed, so will others. So let the best win. The Talent Code is a really cool title. I’ll look into it. Thanks for the recommendation and again for the vote of confidence 😃

  20. #43 by Vanessa on April 20, 2017 - 8:18 am

Good luck!!! I hope you win!!
